Tarte Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara

A while back I purchased a set of sample sized Tarte mascaras and finally made my way to the last one. The two that I tried before this one didn't really impress me all that much, but let's see if it was any different with this one...

Tarte Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara comes in a black tube with a golden details on the packaging and the lid. This mini size contains 3 ml of product, while the full size has 6,9 ml which I think is less than what mascaras normally contain. The mascara promises to be ultra black and is supposed to deliver thicker dramatic lashes, while it's formula also softens and nourishes them.
The mascara felt a little dry from the start and I distinctively remember using it for the first time, when thanks to the brush with spiky plastic bristles, more product ended up on my lids than my lashes. I much prefer mascaras with natural bristles, but have grown to also love some with plastic ones (like Maybelline Lash Sensational or Benefit Roller Lash), as long as they're not too long and feel like I'm going to end up poking myself in the eyes. The mascara looks nicely black on my lashes and I usually apply two coats, although it looks best with three (but I lack the patience to always apply three). With this one I always curl my lashes before I apply it and find that it doesn't hold the curl all day and I pretty much always also end up with some smudges and flakies around my eyes (I start noticing flaky bits after about 2 hours and smudging after 4-5; all that without me touching the eyes). The effect I get on my lashes is mostly volume, definition and a tiny bit of lengthening. It's an ok mascara for everyday, but I definitely wouldn't repurchase it, since I'm not a fan of the brush and I get a better effect with some drugstore mascaras I've tried recently (again I have to mention the Maybelline Lash Sensational and L'Oreal Voluminous Lash Paradise).
Closer look at the brush:
Applied to my lashes - curled lashes, no product // one coat // two coats // three coats:
I don't think Tarte's mascaras get mentioned that much in the beauty world (at least currently) and after trying the three travel-sized ones (besides this one also Tarte Lights, Camera, Flashes Mascara & Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara) my impressions are that they're all somewhat average and for the full price don't really deliver the results I would want from a high end priced product.
Tarte products are available here or here online.
