By now, I’m sure we’re all at least somewhat aware of the danger sun exposure can have on our skin. Instead of baking outside in the sun to get the desired bronzed complexion a smarter choice is opting for self-tanners or gradual self-tanners. If you’re new to this, opting for gradual self-tanners is probably a better choice - they gradually add color to your skin (or extend the lasting power of your tan) and are generally fool-proof to use. Today I’ll be sharing my thoughts and experiences from using four different gradual self-tanners with different price points: Garnier, Dove, Melvita and Palmer’s (not pictured above).
Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Natural Bronze Gradual Tanning Moisturizer (250 ml for around 8 €) is formulated with Cocoa Butter and Vitamin E and comes in packaging with a pump for easier dosage. This is one of the most effective self-bronzers I’ve tried so far, because it actually worked after one single application. It’s hard to over do, but it might not be the best option for people with fair or light skin, because after a couple applications the color starts to accumulate and leans somewhat orange-y. The lotion has a slight beige-y tint, while the texture is lightweight, soaks into the skin quickly and feels hydrating. The scent is also not a favourite - you can’t tell when you first apply it, but the off putting self-tanner smell quickly becomes overwhelming over the usual Palmer’s cocoa scent, which was quite disappointing for me. I’d say this is best for medium skin tones or already tanned skin for adding or extending the tan, and an option if you don't mind the self-tan scent lingering on the skin.
I was really excited to try the Garnier Summer Body Moisturising Sun-Kissed Look Lotion in Light (250 ml for 7,20 €) because of the number of positive reviews I’ve seen online. It has a pretty fluid consistency and feels lightweight and perfect to use in the summer time because of the added fruity apricot scent. When I was testing it, I noticed it started adding some color to the skin after 4 days. When first applied it also adds glow to the skin, but as it sinks in (really quickly) the glow disappears and after about two to three hours the self tanner smell becomes somewhat noticeable on the skin. Otherwise it left a natural result on the skin. This one comes in formulation for light and deeper skin tones and I would recommend it if you're looking for something that will build the color slowly and can also be used as a regular moisturizer in the summer time (and you don't mind the self-tanner smell).
Melvita Prosun Gradual Self-Tanning Moisturizing Gel-Cream* (150 ml for 31 €) smells incredible. The mixture of delicious vanilla flower with a touch of coconut and orange couldn’t be a more perfect combo for the summer. Once applied to the skin it took a couple of minutes to sink in and after three applications my skin was left with a soft and natural bronze color. The texture is between a gel and cream that is silky soft, hydrates the skin and leaves it very soft. The gel-cream has a slight yellow color once it's out of the tube and could easily double as a usual luxurious moisturizer in the summer or year round. This was the only product of the bunch that I tested that didn’t develop a strong self tanner smell on my skin, since it's formulated with Erythrulose (plant-based bronzing agent, derived from cane sugar) instead of the usual DHA that some are allergic to. This one can be used on the face as well, but I never tried it there.
Dove Sunshine Body Lotion (250 ml for around 3,6 €/4€ in Muller) would be my second option or my pick if you’re on a budget. It has a similar classic clean scent like other Dove products. On the skin it takes three days to show up some color and doesn’t develop into a smelly mess after a couple of hours of sitting on the skin - I did detect some self tanner smell, but not to the extent of the ones from Palmer's or Garnier. I did notice that it came off onto my towel after showering, so there's a chance it could also stain your clothes. The texture is creamier than the one from Garnier and feels hydrating, where it could double as a usual moisturizer in the summer.
On my skin L-R: Garnier Summer Body Moisturising Sun-Kissed Look Lotion - Melvita Prosun Gradual Self-Tanning Moisturizing Gel-Cream - Dove Sunshine Body Lotion:
I would like to stress out that all above mentioned products contain a certain amount of self tanning ingredients which means that you should wash your hands well after application, or else they might stain the skin. These products also don't contain sun screen so they do not protect against sunburn - even if your skin appears tanned after use, you should still apply sun screen if you're going to be outside in the sun.
Let me know if you've tried any of the mentioned products and what your experiences with them were, or if you have any other recommendations. I'm also working on Part 2 which will focus on different 'classic' Self-Tanners ( it should be up soon).
